How Michael Jacksons death affected the Internet


Michael Jacksons death has to be biggest loss of the internet era. Therefore, this had a profound affect on the internet:


  • 70% of google searches of google searches were to do with Michael Jackson on the day and day after his death.


  • Websites, such as http://www.tmz.com/, crashed under the strain of a sudden rush of people wanting more information and updates on Michael and people wanting to pay their respects but that did not stop the news spreading via blogs and social networking sites
  • Nine out of the ten most popular topics discussed on Twitter were about Jackson, with many celebrities choosing the site to express their condolences.
  • Facebook reported that the number of status updates during the hour after Jackson's death was triple the average.

  • Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said that the passing of the global icon caused "the biggest jump in tweets per second since the US presidential election".

  • So many people wanted to verify the early reports of Jackson’s death that the computers powering Google's news section interpreted the surge of 'Michael Jackson' requests as an automated attack.
