How Michael Jacksons death affected the Internet

Michael Jacksons death has to be biggest loss of the internet era. Therefore, this had a profound affect on the internet:

  • 70% of google searches of google searches were to do with Michael Jackson on the day and day after his death.

  • Websites, such as http://www.tmz.com/, crashed under the strain of a sudden rush of people wanting more information and updates on Michael and people wanting to pay their respects but that did not stop the news spreading via blogs and social networking sites
  • Nine out of the ten most popular topics discussed on Twitter were about Jackson, with many celebrities choosing the site to express their condolences.
  • Facebook reported that the number of status updates during the hour after Jackson's death was triple the average.

  • Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said that the passing of the global icon caused "the biggest jump in tweets per second since the US presidential election".

  • So many people wanted to verify the early reports of Jackson’s death that the computers powering Google's news section interpreted the surge of 'Michael Jackson' requests as an automated attack.

Prosecutor attacks French Scientology

A French prosecutor has recommended a Paris court dissolve the Church of Scientology's French branch when it rules on charges of fraud against the organisation. Registered as a religion in the Untied States, Scientology enjoys no such legal protection in France, where it has faced repeated accusations of being a money-making cult.

Scientists close to finding "alien" life

Astronomers may be just two decades away from finding extraterrestrial life, by using a new technique that analyses starlight streaming through a planet's atmosphere. Tested on the Earth, strong signs of life were found in the form of chemical "fingerprints". Analysing the light patterns, known as "transmission spectrums", can reveal chemicals such as oxygen and water, which indicate the presence of life. The test was carried out during a lunar eclipse by observing moonlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere - equivalent to observing the Earth's spectrum from far away as it passed in front of the Sun. Dr Enrie Palle, from the Astrophysics Institute of transmission spectrum of an inhabited planet looks like, we have a the Canaries, wrote in the journal Nature: "Now we know what the much better idea of how find and recognise Earth-like planets outside our solar system where life may be thriving".

Ancient bug could hold extraterrestrial secrets

A tiny bug found discovered deep under the Greenland ice has been reawakened from a slumber lasting more than 100,000 thousand years.

And scientists believe the unusual bacterium - Herminiimonas glaciei - may hold clues to life on other planets.

Researchers found the bug when they examined a 120,000-year-old, 3km-deep core sample drilled from glacial ice.

It took the scientists the best part of a year to coax the dormant microbes back to life by carefully warming the ice they were housed in.

As the bugs awoke and began to replicate, colonies of tiny purple-brown bacteria started to appear.

H. glaciei belongs to a rare family of "ultramicro" bacteria that live in extreme environments.

It can be up to 50 times smaller than the food bug E.coli.

Dr J Loveland-Curtze, who led the US team at Pennsylvania State University, said: "These extremely cold environments are the best analogues of possible extraterrestrial habitats."

"the exceptionally low temperatures can preserve cells and nucleic acids for for even millions of years."

"H. glaciei is one of just a handful of officially ultra-small species and the only one so far from the Greenland ice sheet."

"Studying these bacterian can provide insight into how cells can survive and even grow under extremely harsh conditions."

She stressed that H. glaciei was not harmfl to humans - which was just as well since it can pass straight through safety filters commonly used in laboratories and hospitals."

But Dr Loveland-Curtze warned that if harmful - or pathogenic - super-small bugs existed they would be hard to detect.

She said: "Other pathogens... could be present in solutions presumed to be sterile.

Heinz unveils USB microwave launch

One in five workers is too stressed to eat any lunch, leaving many feeling lethargic by the end of the day. A surrvey of more than 2,000 adults by food giant Heinz suggested a new office culture of "all work and no eat" because of work pressures. Heinz unveiled the data as it helped launch a prototype of the world's smallest portable microwave, which is powered by a computers USB port.

JLA/Avengers Similarities

I do not mind similarities in characteristics in characters in books or movies because they have templates e.g. "Hero", "Anti-Hero" and "Damsel-in-Distress", but when it comes to comic books and super-heroes I get angry. There is no reason why any two super-heroes should be in any way similar, or at least not as similar as the following.

Are you a Nerd, Geek or a Dork?

I took the nerd, geek or dork test at okcupid.comand these are my results

Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test...

Outcast Genius

61 % Nerd, 52% Geek, 52% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.

A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.

A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in all three, earning you the title of: Outcast Genius.

Outcast geniuses usually are bright enough to understand what society wants of them, and they just don't care! They are highly intelligent and passionate about the things they know are *truly* important in the world. Typically, this does not include sports, cars or make-up, but it can on occassion (and if it does then they know more than all of their friends combined in that subject).

Outcast geniuses can be very lonely, due to their being outcast from most normal groups and too smart for the room among many other types of dorks and geeks, but they can also be the types to eventually rule the world, ala Bill Gates, the prototypical Outcast Genius.

Congratulations!

Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in any of the following:

Spam Poison

As I was on the blog "Buckfast for breakfast" (on the blogroll) I was looking for some html accessories for this blog. I came across a button that said "spam poison" on it. It sounded cool so I clicked on it (lostfanvanjellies22 does not condone clicking on random buttons). It was a link to this site. I thought it was an ingenious idea! NO MORE BOTS! YAY!

But I went back later and said ... "Wait a minute. Bots? Spiders? Crawlers on my blog? Do they even exist? I'm pretty sure they do but whether they do or not, if you look closely at both of the codes they are actually just links to the spam poison page! They do not have any significance at all. They're just links!

But maybe the "bots" go to these links rather than searching your blog? that might explain the 10 million hits it's getting on a daily basis!
In my opinion - this is just a link. Nothing More. If any of you know about these things and/or if they work or not, or even if you have more buttons to share you know what to do! E-mail me!

P.S. I am leaving it on the sidebar because

  1. It looks cool.
  2. It might work.

I saved this photo from Google Images and opened it with Microsoft Paint, gave him the milk moustache and imported it into Windows Movie Maker. I could then add a title and take of it. I also made a video of it with intro, credits and music! You can watch the video here or in the video section of this blog. If you would like the code you can click on the photo, or go to the photobucket link where it says "contact me".

Books

The Hithchhikers Series

These books are hilarious! They will keep you laughing for the rest of your life.

The Lord of the Rings Novel

These three volumes are amazing! They are classics and will last for ever. They completely blew me away. The length of them is enough to do that.

The "Lost" Books

I have all of these books. The storyline in them are amazing and add alot more to the lost storyline. They are all written very well but should not be included in the lost continuity storyline. They bring lost back to reality

The Hobbit

You should read this before reading "LOTR". It will help you understand everything by Tolkien. Everything he wrote revolves around this simple book.

Nick Shadow's Midnight Library

A collection of some of his short stories that seem harmless but are actually unharmless/harmful!
The Alex Rider SeriesThese books by Anthony Horowitz are so well written that when the seventh book came out before christmas i started to re-read them. I would recommend starting the reading from book one but the fourth book "Eagle Strike" is by far the best!

The Salmon of Doubt

After the the author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" died some nosy guy decided to get some of his essays from his beloved mac computer and publish them along with the first eleven chapters of his unfinished Dirk Gently book. Some essays are very random such as, the letter y, 2 dogs in New Mexico, deadlines abd the sound of music.
"I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."
Also: check out the meaning of Liff and the deeper meaning of Liff.
Johhny Maxwell Trilogy

These books are not overly funny buit it's well worth the read

The Silmarillion, Children Of Hurin and Unfinished Tales By Tolkien

Classis books that should be read after "The Lord Of The Rings". This book is set in the first age whereas Lotr is in the fifth age.

The Invisible Man By H.G. Wells

If you liked watching the Illusionist you will like reading this. Very appealing.

The Ultimates: Against All Enemies

This book can be a bit tedious at times but generally there is an okay storyline with a lack of action and full-scale wars.

I am Legend

This book does tend to drag on a little bit and is not as fast as the movie but is still worth reading, ideally before the movie.

Tree and Leaf

Movies

The Lord of the Rings

As you know these films are astonishing but they are very long and I never have enough time to watch them.

Transformers

This movie was confusing at times but it was astonishing. I might have to watch it again. The girl in it is hot ;).

The Bourne Series

Flawless. Absolutely astonishing! These movies are about the C.I.A. and David Webb getting his memory back.

The Pirates of the Caribbean

These are just cool movies. That are fun to watch. Not exactly astonishing but definitely worth it.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Any fan of "hitchhikers" will love this movie (and books). It is hilarious and astonishing and exactly like anyone would have predicted.

Star Wars

These films are classics. Some of them are not good but others are not so not good. I would recommend IV,III,I and VI

300

A hardcore movie with hardcore action! I think its something about the roman empire but the action distracts you from the storyline.

I, Robot

Based on the novel with the same name this movie provides geeks and nerds alike with a satisfying storyline with odd tidbits of action.

I am Legend

This is an astonishing movie about a disease that (supposedly) kills off the entire planet. The ............guy.............. thats in it wanders around Manhattan, has to eventually find ways to fight off the infected people who are now zombies and even returns dvd's to the store (rental policy). Imagine having the whole of New York to yourself (with evil, dead, zombie-people of course.)

Deja Vu

This movie is highly recommended but it is hard to explain as the character goes back in time. Hence the name.

The Illusionist

This movie is quite mysterious as it involves realistic magic and an interpretable storyline.

Escape From Alcatraz

This movie is slightly dated but still a good one if you like the stroyline. It is like The Great Escape except toned down a little bit.

Monty Python: Life Of Brian

Hilarious!! If you like H2G2 you will like this.

Napoleon Dynamite

A day in the life of a nerd? Very funny film that we can all relate to. All movies about stereotypical nerds have to be funny.

Zodiac

This mysterious movie that is based on a true story will keep you thinking for weeks!

Hancock

This movie is ......... meh. Will Smith is good in it and funny at times. There is an interesting twist in the plot near the end. The movie did lack imagination.

Man on Wire

This is the most tense movie i have ever seen. Imagine a man being supported by a mere wire 450m above the concrete of my beloved NYC. The suspense was painful! I was scared for him.

The Dark Knight

This was the first batman movie I saw. It is interesting to see a superhero that actually doesnt have super-powers! And yes, Heath Ledger is as good in it as everyone says he is as the Joker. He was the best part of the movie!

Contact

This movie gets better as it goes on so do be patient with it. The end can be confusing but still mind-blowing. There was a bit too much drama. Stuff like "Oh, I'm so deprived" but when it gets to faxes from aliens and dimension-travelling balls of metal flying through a big chunk of metal designed by aliens it doesnt get much better!

Angels and Demons

Angels and Demons is a mysterious film about a symbologist assigned to solve a mystery involving the illuminati and the Roman Catholic Church. This is the sequel to the Da Vinci Code so if you liked that you'll like this.

1408

This horror movie (based on a book by Stephen King) is about a paranormal investigator who takes a visit to a haunted hotel room and never gets out.

Games

Splinter Cell

This is a really cool game but apparently it is very hard.

Ghost Recon

Another cool game but yet again it would take your whole life to complete it.

Rainbow Six

There doesnt seem to be anything wrong with this game. I would Reommend it highly.

Call of Duty

This is very different to the Tom Clancy games. Amazing!

Medal of Honor

These games are perfect if you like WWII shoot em-ups!

Runescape

At first this seems simple and straight forward but this is a huge game on the internet. You would have to spend alot of time on it to get anywhere and make the game good.

The Lord of The Rings: The Return Of The King (PS2)

This is an astonishing game but to get to a point where you have completed every level with every character with a "perfect" score and buy all the spells and get every character to level 20 it will take a lot of patience (but I'm pretty close!).

Star Wars Jedi Starfighter

A great game but it is painfully easy.

Lego Star Wars

A really funny game. Well worth the money that you pay for it. And yes I have completed it.

The Great Escape

A WWII game that is not violent but extremely sneaky. (and yes you can buy this game)
